Is Tiny Fey Going To Take Over SNL After 2025?

Much to my chagrin, I realized I miscalculated when it came to when the 50th season of SNL is. It’s not THIS season, but NEXT season. Anyway, that’s not really the point of this post — the point is: who is going to replace Lorne Michaels at SNL?

Apparently, the rumor is that the job is Tina Fey’s if she wants it. She would do a great job. She is my favorite pick, at the moment. But she is a really busy person with a lot on her plate and the case could be made that her career is too well developed for her to want the job, no matter how prestigious it might be.

There are two other people I think might be dark horse candidates — Seth Meyers and John Mulaney. Both of them are a little younger than Fey and could potentially be in the job a lot longer.

I could totally see Fey being something of a transitional figure for the show, only being willing to serve a few years before handing the gig off to someone else. If Fey doesn’t get / want the job, my bet is on Mulaney because he’s 40 and could grow into the job.

There is the risk, of course, that whenever Michaels retires, that will be it for the show. I’ve heard chatter that NBC suits hate the show for being too complicated and expensive. Of course, it’s possible that if NBC pulls the plug on the show that a streamer like Netflix might pick it up without a hiccup.

Something About Nikki Glaser Is Endearing

I’ve seen comic Nikki Glaser on Conan’s show several times recently and found her a delight. A lot of female comics seem to be trying way too hard. But something about her brashness is refreshing.

While I definitely think women are funny, they often have a very different type of humor than male comics. A prime example of this is Eva Victor. Victor is rather gentle in her very funny humor. It might benefit her to get some advice from Tina Fey as to how to be a bit more biting. It’s often tough for women to talk about the same things as men in the same way. I think that’s what set Glaser apart — she’s pretty much a male comic who happens to be female.

In a sense, the person I would compare her to is Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Waller-Bridge seems like she would do well doing stand-up should the mood strike her. Both women can cut you with a choice word.

What’s interest is Amy Schumer is Glaser’s contemporary and yet I just don’t find her very funny. Both women inhabit the approximately the same mindspace. I just like Glaser as a person more. Glaser seems like she would be fun to hang out with, while Schumer can come off as rather grating.

Anyway. What do I know.

Who Will One Day Replace Lorne Michaels At SNL?

Lorne Michaels is a TV institution unto himself, but he’s no spring chicken. There’s going to come a point when he feels the need to retire. The only person I could possible see replacing him is, of course, Tina Fey.

Fey is at a point in her career where she might be enticed to take up running SNL. She’s the only person I can think of who has fits the sweet spot of having worked at SNL and also having the writing skill to take the show into its 50th decade.

I struggle to think of anyone else who could fill Michaels shoes. I doubt they would want to bring in an outsider, no matter how talented or powerful they might otherwise be. But if Fey wasn’t available, I guess they would have to find someone. They would need someone who was a name brand person who was just as networked in showbiz as Michaels.

I dunno. I’m stumped. But much like Queen Elizabeth, Michaels may surprise us all and simply keep going long, long, long after we assume he would otherwise retire.
