NuHouse: Charli XCX’s ‘Hot In It’ As The ‘New Sound’

One of the highlights of my life to date was when I DJed at a little expat bar in Seoul called Nori. I have greatly romanticize what happened at the bar, but I did realize that I have an ear for music. The bar was very much an “American Bandstand” type place and usually if it had a “beat and you can dance to it” it played well there.

Charli XCX

For sometime now, it seems as though a number of artists have been thrashing around, looking for a “New Sound” of some sort. Usually, it just sounds like New Wave. But I think maybe we’ve settled on what the New Sound is going to be — NuHouse.

A number of major artists — Beyonce among them — have come out with Neo-House albums. My favorite song at the moment is Charli XCX’s “Hot In It.” It’s just the type of single that would make people go crazy at Nori during the weekend primetime slot.

It’s got a beat and you can dance to it, as they say. I love it. I have it on heavy repeat on Spotify right now. It will be interesting to see if anyone else comes out with a dance pop rock or NuHouse album.

More of that, please!

A Hot Take On Halsey

I really, really like Halsey. But the thing about her is, she seems to be among a number of established artists who seem to be thrashing around creatively for a New Sound.

The logical thing for her to do is to veer into traditional pop rock. It’s right there. If she came out out with a pop rock album that wasn’t just warmed over NIN in its vibe, then I think she would find a lot of success.

It definitely seems as though the audience wants something akin to neo-New Wave. That’s what Zoomers want. They have no idea what New Wave and punk are and if you came out with music that was updated New Wave I think it would be a huge hit.

But, lulz. No one one listens to me. But I’m an Old, so I have some perspective on things. And I think if you someone like Halsey really studied The Talking Heads or Blondie and got a really good producer (Butch Vig?) to rock her up some, I think that’s a sure fire hit.
