Sora 2 & The Singularity

by Shelt Garner

The case could be made that the advent of Sora 2 is a pretty powerful ping from a looming technological Singularity. The future could be pretty strange in some surreal and beautiful ways.

Which, of course, is pretty much the definition of a Singularity.

Anyway, we clearly are not ready for some of the quirkier elements of the potentially looming Singularity. I mean, high quality faux video really is the stuff of scifi. And it’s going to take a while for our culture to understand what the fuck we’re going to do with this next technology.

This happens in the context of there seemingly being a general lull in LLM development. I used to be convinced that the Singularity — in this case ASI — would happen in a few years, maybe 2027.

But now…I don’t know. I think there maybe a “wall” and, as such, the Singularity may be a lot more gradual than I expected. Instead of ASI gods walking around, telling us what to do, we will all just have Knowledge Navigators that lurk in our smartphones.

Who knows.

AI Discourse: We Still Haven’t Found What We’re Looking For

From what I can tell of the discourse on Twitter within the AI community, a lot of people won’t be happy unless OpenAI announces an AGI that will end humanity. A lot of people sound like fucking spoiled brats.

Now, I understand what’s going on.

The release of ChatGPT 4 was such a revelation that people had no expectations. For a few days, they we happy with ChatGPT 4 because they had not yet developed any expectations.

Now, however, people have some very cold, hard expectations. They want not just Artificial General Intelligence — NOW — they want absolutely no guardrails to the point that if any user told AGI to blow the world up, it would.

Anything less than those metrics and “it’s so over” to use the parlance of AI Twitter.

It’s all very annoying. I mean, I want AGI just as much as the next tech nerd, but I would prefer that it didn’t end all of humanity. I would like there to be SOME guardrails.

Anyway, I suppose AGI will be invented soon enough and it will destroy us all.

My Big Prediction For 2024

by Shelt Garner
@sheltgarner

Because I just can’t game out what will happen with Election 2024 at the moment, I will tell you my Big Prediction for 2024 — an AI generated movie better looking than Toy Story will be development by some wildcat technology firm.

It might not come out until 2025, but it will begin production in 2024. And as technology advances, within a few years the whole process will be so sped up that AI digital personal assistants will be able to create personalized versions of movies — or stories in general — simply by you, the user, asking for it.

All of this means that ALL human creativity will get nuked by AI to the point that human created art will begin to have a lot of cultural value because…it was created by humans.

I’d like to think that I will be able to get at least one of my planned novels published before the Petite Singularity, but only time will tell.
