‘Vortex’ — #Lyrics To A Dance Pop Song

I love this title for a song. It’s perfect. It’s a strong word and, like “Toxic,” it’s two syllables. And, I like the context of it being about something — or someone — being crazy and causing a lot of trouble. I have tried over and over again to write lyrics to a song with this title and nothing has been of note. But here’s another attempt. I don’t have any beats, but imagine it’s really fast and dance-pop like Toxic. If it has that internal beat structure built into it in too obvious a manner, remember I need a co-writer and a composer (someone who knows something about music) to make this into actual lyrics. I just like writing stories in verse.

spin things off of me like a hurricane
got no name don’t blame me it’s my game
touch my thigh just right
might let you ride my vortex eye by midnight
once you make me leer
I’ll take it straight from here

[pre-chorus]
want you in my center
I’m a real spinner
sin is my game

[chorus]
things are getting crazy
no one’s ever called me lazy
bring me to your place
I’ll make a mess with my vortex
don’t forget to lock the door
I’ll make a mess with my vortex

don’t you fret my pet
the best is on its way
if you can handle it

[pre-chorus]
I’ll keep you steady
as the wind begins to whip
what are you willing to get it

[chorus]
don’t complain not one bit
this vortex is going to be lit
my eye is in your path
it’s the strongest vortex yet
I’ll rip your tree from its roots
my vortex will leave you shaking in your boots
my vortex will leave you shaking in your boots
my vortex will leave you shaking in your boots

‘Never Trend’ — #Lyrics To A Dance Pop Song

I have no beat, but in my imagination this would be a dance pop song where you clearly heard the lyrics.

Never Trend
lyrics by Shelton Bumgarner
@bumgarls

never trend
in the end my friend
let me tell you
never trend
never trend
never trend

so you want to be famous
you say yes
scream and shout that’s
what it’s all about
want to see your name in lights
people know your name
but that’s a shame ’cause

never trend
in the end my friend
let me tell you
never trend
never trend
never trend

people spend all their lives
fighting for a chance at spotlight
starlight on their face is all they want
right now they cry
they live in anticipation
there wish will come true
but what can you do
’cause you’ll rue the day
you trend I’m afraid

never trend
in the end my friend
let me tell you
never trend
never trend
never trend

[bridge]
the Twitter box
is full of glitter
tweeting away with the deets
but you’ll regret it in thend
when you trend

but don’t listen to me
you’ll love it I bet when
everything comes crashing down
the moment you trend
and you’re on the run

never trend
in the end my friend
let me tell you
never trend
never trend
never trend

‘You Remind Me Of My Daughter’ — #Lyrics To A Woke Dance Pop Song

Now, I know that typically songs like this start with beats then go from there, but I enjoy telling stories in verse so you get this. It’s just for fun. It’s relaxing.

You Remind Me of My Daughter
lyrics by Shelton Bumgarner
@bumgarls

you remind me of my daughter
you remind me of my daughter
you remind me of my daughter

you’re my kind of girl
I’ll never lie to you
lure you to my bedroom
we can watch shark week
you’ll be on my show
I’ll make you a star
after we go far, far, far

you remind me of my daughter
you remind me of my daughter
you remind me of my daughter

no know has to know
that you’re going to the show
because of what we do between the sheets
you can spank me all you like
I’ll be your little boy with a hiss
when people ask what we have together
I’ll just say with a smile

you remind me of my daughter
you remind me of my daughter
you remind me of my daughter

[bridge]
no one will understand
why you make me so glad
all the other girls will be envious
because they know I like it rough

you remind me of my daughter
you remind me of my daughter
you remind me of my daughter

‘Life During Trump’ — #Lyrics To A Woke Pop-Rock Song

This is just me screwing around. I am a little unnerved by Trump these days and I need to vent a little bit in verse. That’s all that’s going on. I want to tell a story in verse and this would have a really danceable beat like The Talking Heads’ Life During Wartime.

Life During Trump
lyrics by Shelton Bumgarner
@bumgarls
please give credit if you produce or perform

the end on its way I’m afraid
people are oblivious to Trump’s shit
but when he hits the button
we’ll be left to scream in the dark
all we want is the chance to get laid
but when the lights go out our chances will be dim
there’s going to be fear all around
in the dark we won’t be able to see the blood
the loving will be over
we’ll just have doom to deal with

life during Trump
is always on the edge of getting us cut
life during Trump
is no time to strut
life during Trump
either you know what’s up and rut
or don’t

things don’t seem like they could get worse
but they keep getting worse and worse
the quiet before the storm is here
we’ve been warned that all we hold dear
will disappear in a giant blast of haze
when will do something about all of this
the ding of the alarm bells need to be blessed
we’re just going to have to pray
that things don’t stay this way
and fade away into their destiny

life during Trump
is always on the edge of getting us cut
life during Trump
is no time to strut
life during Trump
either you know what’s up and rut
or don’t

[bridge]
we’re all in a crisis
it’s obvious to see
just flee, flee, flee
into the darkness of history
into the darkness of history

when you think couldn’t get worse
here we are
Trump is making a grab for the suitcase
and his aides are rushing him
hoping to prevent the end of time
all I have his my rhyme
hoping it will surive

life during Trump
is always on the edge of getting us cut
life during Trump
is no time to strut
life during Trump
either you know what’s up and rut
or don’t

‘Summer Solstice’ — Lyrics To A Woke Pop-Rock-Rap Song Of The Summer

These lyrics are meant to be set to a song of the summer kind of beat. I am using the events floating around right now. But given that no one listens to me, really I’m just trying to tell a story in verse for my own enjoyment. This song is meant to be a homage to The Temptations’ Ball Of Confusion.

Summer Solstice
lyrics by Shelton Bumgarner
@bumgarls

the world is growing warmer by the moment
the days are growing hotter every day
the days seem to be growing longer too
there’s nothing to stop our doom
we need to address the change in climate
but Trump just sits on his tiny, tiny hands

[chorus]
summer solstice
the longest day of the year
summer solstice
the longest day of the year
is full of fear
is full of fear
is full of fear

a billion here a billion there
the Man is making more and more
while you and me are growing poor
they want to defund everything we need
23 million to lose their health care
all because the powers that be
want to annoy people like me

[chorus]
summer solstice
the longest day of the year
summer solstice
the longest day of the year
is full of fear
is full of fear
is full of fear

[bridge]
voter rights
are fading fast
racists delight
guns on the streets
people wanting to regulate us
beneath the sheets
it’s all happening
on summer solstice

[chorus]
summer solstice
the longest day of the year
summer solstice
the longest day of the year
is full of fear
is full of fear
is full of fear

‘Denial’ — Lyrics To A Woke Pop-Rock-Dance Protest Song

I have mixed emotions about Selena Gomez’s song Bad Liar. In some ways it’s the song of the summer, and in other ways it kind of gets on my nerves a little bit. But it’s definitely got a beat and you can dance to it. But it has gotten me thinking about a similar song with more, um, “woke” lyrics that would be a sly take on climate deniers. At last, that’s the aim.

Denial
lyrics by Shelton Bumgarner
@bumgarls
please give credit if you produce or perform

with you in control
the world continues to spin
but you have to admit
you’re doing nothing to stop
nothing to stop, nothing stop
how quickly it’s growing hot
and what not
so you can deny it all you want
tell me to slow my roll
but it’s clear
the world is getting hotter
it’s hot as can be
now what baby

[chorus]
stop denying what we all can see
stop denying what we all can feel
the world’s growing hot, hot, hot

those around you refuse to see
what is right before your face
your skin sweats just like mine
the summer seems to last all year long
the sun ain’t getting closer
but when I see you my blood seems to boil
we’re all going to suffer
the people across the globe can see
what we both know is the truth
you need to stop denying the facts

[chorus]
stop denying what we all can see
stop denying what we all can feel
the world’s growing hot, hot, hot

[bridge]
things are changing so quickly
the ice caps are melting at a rapid pace
what are you going to do when
there’s no ice left to rub across your face

don’t be in denial
don’t be in denial
don’t be in denial

‘Anything’ — Lyrics To A Woke Anti-Trump Dance Pop Song

This uses found verse from the Access Hollywood tape that somehow failed to sink Donald Trump’s presidential bid. In my imagination, it would have a thumping baseline like Britney Spears’ “Womanizer.” It is sung from a woman’s point of view, kind of directly talking to Donald Trump. It would use a sample from the Access Hollywood for great effect, if done properly. This is definitely a first rough draft, but I like the concept a lot.

Anything

[Donald Trump, spoken]
And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.
And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.

think you’re a celebrity
think you can do anything
now you’re our leader
that’s what they say
much to my dismay
much to my dismay

[hook, Donald Trump, spoken]
Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.
Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.
Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.

we live in an era of disorder
the Russians are in the house
flipping things about
you’re a silent lout

now we’re in the streets
wearing our pussy hats
telling you what’s next
your hands are small
we’re see you at the ballot box
the free world we are going to rock

[hook, Donald Trump, spoken]
Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.
Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.
Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.

[bridge]
people in the streets
dancing around with pride
I pass on by with a smile
knowing we’re going to have victory
soon enough baby

you think you can do anything
but that’s not true
that’s not true
won’t know what hit you
when we’re done with you

[hook, Donald Trump, spoken]
Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.
Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.
Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.

‘Vortex’ — Lyrics To A Woke Dance-Pop Anti-Trump Song

I have toyed with the lyrics to a song called “Vortex” for some time now. I think it’s a great title to a “Toxic” type song and for no other reason than I have some time on my hands, I thought I’d write some lyrics to a “woke” dance-pop song using that title. It’s just fun trying to tell a story in verse, so you get stuff like this. Actually, if you study pop songs like Toxic, they’re really tough to write because they use words so sparingly. Regardless, here you go. This is very much a first draft, so take that into consideration. But it’s promising. It’s an interesting concept for a dance song.

Vortex
lyrics by Shelton Bumgarner
@bumgarls
please give credit if you produce or perform

it seems everyone around me is complicit
there’s a swirling around the king
where will this all end
I sing and sing
wait a moment more will come
this vortex has just begun

[Pre-Chorus]
the talking heads demand we listen
will the airbags open up
will this vortex suck us in

[Chorus]
weather’s getting worse
a tornado is on the loose
we’re going to have to hold on tight
someone is going to testify again
time to batten down
the vortex is getting stronger
time to batten down
the vortex is getting stronger

we’re all worried for our fate
what will happen to this ship of state
the vortex is swirling around

[Pre-Chorus]
the talking heads demand we listen
will the airbags open up
will this vortex suck us in

[Chorus]
weather’s getting worse
a tornado is on the loose
we’re going to have to hold on tight
someone is going to testify again
time to batten down
the vortex is getting stronger
time to batten down
the vortex is getting stronger

‘Life During Trumplandia’ — Lyrics To A Dance Pop-Rock Protest Song

This is a direct homage to The Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime.” I am not saying I’m nearly as good a writer as they are, but I am angry at Trumplandia and this is just me venting in verse. No one cares about any of these lyrics I’m writing, so this is just me screaming out into the void, if nothing else.

Life During Trumplandia
lyrics by Shelton Bumgarner
@bumgarls
please give credit if you produce or perform

the leader could strangle someone on 5th Avenue
the people would scoff and move right along
no one seems to be paying attention to this threat
the Russians are here it appears
we angle for peace in our time
but all we get is lies to our surprise

[chorus]
Lordy, I hope there are tapes
is all we can say in unison
there’s no fuzz on this issue
let’s impeach, impeach, impeach

the Vichy Republicans have control of the radio
they seem to be on every block
watch what you say I sigh with dismay
there’s just going to be doom for days and days
The Resistance will be victorious I believe
but only through persistence will that happen
you can bet things will go up and down
we have a clown as a president
a loon you might say
we are going to rock the free world
life during Trumplandia

[chorus]
Lordy, I hope there are tapes
is all we can say in unison
there’s no fuzz on this issue
let’s impeach, impeach, impeach

[bridge]
but I still have hope
hope that things will go our way
I see in the horizon a blue wave
one that will come soon if we pray
we have to keep the faith

Trumplandia is our home for now
but that will change, change, change
give us a little bit of time to fix things
there’s just tomorrow for us to hope for
hope that tomorrow will be a better place
hope that it will be the end of Trumplandia

‘Covfefe’ — Lyrics To An Anti-Trump Pop-Rock Protest Song

I have been reluctant to use this blog to write lyrics, but I enjoy writing lyrics too much, so even though for obvious legal reasons none of the lyrics I write will obviously ever be produced — the whole system of song writing is designed to prevent people like me from breaking into it — I have decided to write lyrics again anyway. The music for these lyrics in my imagination would be a peppy pop song. You would be so busy dancing that you wouldn’t really notice the lyric were kind of serious.

Covfefe
lyrics by Shelton Bumgarner
please give credit if you produce or perform
@bumgarls

walking down the street
smiling from my head to my feet
there’s a word that comes to mind
whenever I think of the blue wave
that will come crashing down on
our heads on election night my friend

covfefe, covfefe, covfefe
don’t let me waste your time
covfefe, covfefe, covfefe
what it means only we two know
late at night when love flows

but the people all around
think with my smile I’m a clown
I know, though, the cold hard truth
that only victory in November will do

covfefe means everything and nothing
as you can tell
it’s the word to wish someone well
when the blue wave reaches our shores
we’ll scream and shout and ask for more

covfefe, covfefe, covfefe
don’t let me waste your time
covfefe, covfefe, covfefe
what it means only we two know
late at night when love flows

[bridge]
what more can I do
what more can I say
but covfefe, covfefe, covfefe

things will soon be done
we’ll have our day in the sun
here’s what I want to exclaim
covfefe, covfefe, covfefe
