Are We Americans ‘Criminally Underestimating’ Trump The Way The Germans Did Hitler?

I’m reading a tome on the rise of Hitler and the Nazis and at one point I recently read in the book that Hitler’s opponents in the Germany government “criminally underestimated him.”

I’ve given it some thought and I don’t think we’re “criminally underestimating” Trump — we’ve just given up. Trump has served his political and historical purpose. If he happens to be the one to transition us into autocracy, then, well, lulz. But it’s MAGA we have to worry about. It’s MAGA that is the cancer that is eating away at the American body politic.

And there any number of nasty little men (and a few women) who want to follow Trump and be America’s maybe not Hitler, but definitely Putin. That’s why so many Republicans act so deranged — they know that the only thing standing in the way of fabulous wealth and incredible power is Trump. If Trump would just go away, there are a dozen would-be autocrats who would do everything in their power to destroy their opponents so they can grab the brass ring of being America’s first autocrat.

So, no, it’s not a matter of underestimating Trump, it’s a matter of not having the political will to do anything neither him nor MAGA that we have to worry about. And it’s that lack of willpower, that giving up, that makes me think that when the time comes we’re just going to slide into autocracy.

It’s going to suck.

Good luck. Get out if you can.
